Fighting maternal mortality: key figures for Cameroon

An overview of key maternal mortality indicators in Cameroon and the action priorities identified by SOGOC and its partners.

Advocacy & public healthPublished on

Maternal mortality remains one of Cameroon's major health challenges. According to the latest data compiled by partner institutions, the national ratio is still around 406 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, far above the SDG target (< 70 per 100,000 by 2030).

The main direct causes identified are obstetric hemorrhages, hypertensive complications and preeclampsia, puerperal infections, unsafe abortions, and dystocias and access barriers.

In response, SOGOC and its partners (MINSANTE, WHO, UNFPA, FIGO) advocate for stronger emergency obstetric care, continuing training of maternity teams, equipping rural facilities with essential medicines, widespread use of low-dose aspirin for high-risk women, and the establishment of maternal death review committees in every region.
